James H. Newell, 63

| January 6, 2023 10:16 AM

James “Jim” H. Newell, 63, of Moon Gulch in Kellogg, Idaho, went to see his family on Dec. 31, 2022. He was anxious to see his father, two brothers-in-law, grandparents, mother-in-law, a nephew, an uncle and many cousins. Jim was born on Feb. 21, 1959, in Emmett, Idaho, a son of Jacob and Bessie Newell.

Jim grew up in Gem County, Idaho, until his late teens, then went to finish his schooling in Pocatello, Idaho, to get his GED. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1980 and was honorably discharged in 1986. Jim married the love of his life, Cynthia “Cyndi” Krause in 1980. The couple lived in the Parma, Idaho, area and started a family; two sons, James Newell and Daniel Newell and a daughter, Amanda Newell. While in the Parma area, Jim worked for his father-in-law for years as a farmer.

When his wife, Cyndi, found her birth mother in North Idaho, the couple made their final move to the Silver Valley. Jim worked at Lookout for six years as a groomer until health issues led him to retirement.

Jim lived his life to the fullest, even with his health concerns. He would always say that he was going to fix something, but his family knew it would usually take him forever to get around to it. He will always be remembered for his humorous attitude.

He enjoyed the outdoors, cutting wood and camping. The Fourth of July was his favorite holiday and he spent it with family and friends blowing up Moon Gulch Canyon with fireworks. He would always put his dad’s U.S. flag up for both the Fourth of July and Memorial Day.

Jim is preceded in death by his father, Jacob Newell; father-in-law Floyd Longley; two brothers-in-law, Tony and Terry Longley; a sister-in-law, Debbie Longley; cousin Skip; nephew Mark; mother-in-law Shirley Krause; and both maternal and paternal grandparents.

He leaves behind a big family and is survived by his wife of 42 years, Cynthia Newell of Kellogg; two sons, James Newell of Fruitland, Idaho, and Daniel (Melissa) Newell, also of Fruitland; a daughter, Amanda Newell and boyfriend Michael O’Keefe of Kellogg; three grandsons, Robert, Thomas and Jaxon; one granddaughter, Mavis; his mother, Bessie Newell; brother Bill Newell; sister Annie Newell; mother-in-law Bertie Longley; father-in-law Dale (Linda) Krause; brother-in-law Robert Krause; and four sisters-in-law, Leann Paytor, Sandee Yeates, Verna Krause and Heather Payne.

Jim also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, friends and extended family members that called him dad, papa or brother, and two special neighbor friends that called him “Jimmy Jim.”

At his request, cremation will take place and a gathering of his family and friends to celebrate his life will be planned for a later date in the summer.

Memories of Jim and messages of condolence may be shared online with his family at www.shoshonefuneralservice.com. Shoshone Funeral Services, Kellogg, is assisting the Newell family with arrangements.
