- Key issues associated with the position?

I believe one major key issue associated with the position of sheriff is the understanding of what the job entails. The sheriff shouldn’t be led by narrow political beliefs, but instead, should focus on protecting the constitutional rights of Shoshone County citizens, listening to the ideas and concerns of the community, and understand how to prioritize those ideas and public safety concerns. Based on our county’s location on I-90 and proximity to larger cities, we’re a small community with big-city crime. A Sheriff needs to have training and experience in law enforcement to understand how to negotiate and combat these issues. Some of those key issues include the role of police in a changing society, how the border crisis is impacting our community/nation, the continual challenge to our 2nd Amendment rights, rising crime rates with minimal resources, and the challenge in hiring/retaining qualified officers with beliefs and values that align with our community.
