Osburn continues to add to Lions Park

OSBURN –– The city of Osburn continues to make major improvements to the once-derelict Lions Park, including the recent completion of a new multi-sport court.  

The new 40’ by 70’ court can be used for both basketball and pickleball and was designed and installed by Cool Courts out of Spokane. 

Jenna Arthun, the community planner for Osburn, was excited to discuss the court's details, including the special technology used to create the unique playing surface.  

“The tiles are VersaCourt's Pickleball Performance which are constructed utilizing a durable polypropylene material that is resistant to crack and fractures,” Arthun said. “The tiles offer great shock absorption, are safer than concrete, and have a life expectancy of 25 to 30 years.  They are also nonslip and offer maximum ball bounce.”  

The special courts are not cheap and can range in prices up to and beyond $30,000. Fortunately, the court was purchased with funds from community grants and sponsorships – including Dave Smith Motors and the Innovia Foundation.  

The new court also feature state-of-the-art basketball hoops that feature 180-degree breakaway rims that allow dunkers to slam the ball with authority.  

Before installing the court tiles, a new pad was needed to give the structure a stable and level surface. This work was completed by local contractors Invicta Contracting, Delvepro, LLC, and Grey Rock Industrial. 

“It cost enough that we ask our community members to please treat the court and hoops with respect so it can be enjoyed for many years,” Arthun said. 

Over the years, Osburn has made great strides in rejuvenating the park, including upgrading the playground equipment, adding the specialized fitness park, and removing all old safety hazards.  

But, according to Arthun, there is still more to come.  

“Although the Lions Park Project is near completion, the city will continue working to seek grant funding to pay for fencing, additional cameras, a walking path, access routes to amenities, etc,” Arthun said. “Local skate shop owner, Suzi Walls, has also been working hard to seek grant funds to design and install a skate park at the east end of the park.”
