Darrell Michael 'Mike' Gunderson, 52

| February 13, 2024 1:00 AM

In the late morning hours of Feb. 7, 2024, Darrell Michael “Mike” Gunderson passed away at the age of 52. He is survived by his wife, Flo; his son, Richard; his daughter, Austyn and her husband, Rene; his daughter, Rylie; his brothers, Curt and Robby; and his nephews, Dylan, Braden and Bryce. He passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, friends and dogs.

Mike was a truly special person who had a never-ending capacity for love. His love for the community was second only to his love for his family and friends. He demonstrated that love during his 32-year law enforcement career, which began at the Kellogg Police Department before serving as a special agent for the DEA and the Department of the Interior. His career culminated in his election as the Shoshone County sheriff in 2016. He ran under the slogan, “Together We Can Do Better,” and during his six years as sheriff, we did better.

Outside the uniform, Mike was always willing to lend an ear to a friend in need. He had a calming demeanor that was present even during the most chaotic situations. He also had a knack for making sarcastic comments while maintaining a straight face, leaving those around him in utter confusion.

Among other things, his family will remember him for his goofy SnapChats, quick wit and secret love of sweet treats.

Mike was a husband, father, brother, uncle, friend, law enforcement officer, coach, boss, mentor, outdoorsman and so much more.

Mike’s memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, 2024, at Kellogg High School, with a reception immediately following at Zany’s.

We will forever cherish the memories shared and find peace in the love and laughter Mike brought into our lives.

Memories of Mike and messages of condolence may be shared with his family online at www.shoshonefuneralservice.com. Shoshone Funeral Services, Kellogg, is honored to assist the Gunderson family with arrangements.
