'Manna from heaven for ski areas'

| January 9, 2024 1:08 AM

It seems the snow gods heard last week’s prayers and are continuing to answer them throughout the week.

Silver Mountain and Lookout Pass Ski and Recreation Area received double-digit inches of snow over the past few days, after weeks of unseasonably warm weather.

“It was a very exciting morning on the mountain as we got enough snow to open Chair 3 and Chair 4, along with the accompanying terrain, for the first time this season,” Silver Mountain Marketing Coordinator Gus Colburn said Monday. “The loud hoots and hollers were echoing off the slopes from skiers as they slashed through about a foot of untouched powder. Looking at the forecast, we are pumped to be able to open more terrain on all lifts as the snow levels allow.”

The snow is arriving in time for Jan. 11, Silver’s annual Jackass Day, a celebration of the birth of the popular resort, with $20 lift tickets. The traditional singing of "Happy Birthday" to the Jackass Ski Bowl will take place at 2 p.m. at Moguls followed by free birthday cake.

“We are excited to finally be seeing white flakes falling from the sky,” Lookout General Manager Matt Sawyer said. “Kind of like manna from heaven for ski areas.”

Lookout’s Free Ski School begins this Saturday at 12:15 for beginners and then next weekend will be intermediate and above.
