KELLOGG –– Shop Small in the Silver Valley kicked off this past weekend with the Silver Valley Chamber’s Annual Winter Evening Market.

Shop Small is an initiative by the Silver Valley Chamber of Commerce to promote holiday buying at the local level as opposed to using big-box or internet retailers.

“The goal of the Shop Small cards is to encourage people to shop locally for gifts this holiday season and promote our small locally owned businesses,” Chamber Events Coordinator Braden Thomas said.

The Winter Evening Market featured local vendors and business owners to come together and show people a small offering of what they can provide, including items like custom clothing, jellies and jams, blankets, pottery, and floral designs.

Set between the Kellogg Elks and the Kellogg Senior Center, uptown Kellogg went from Halloween and fall to full-tilt Christmas over the course of just one afternoon. The event was so festive, Santa Claus managed to pull himself away from his work for an appearance.

“Both kids and adults loved seeing and getting their pictures taken with Santa,” Thomas said. “We had Santa, a cookie decorating station, and a hot cocoa bar. It was a great time for everyone.”

13 local businesses are participating in the Chamber’s Shop Small promotion, which runs from now until New Year’s Eve. Shop Small is a valley-wide initiative, featuring businesses like Muchachos Tacos, The Beanery, the Fainting Goat, Nocturn, Positive Practice, Jim’s Towing & Auto Repair, Valley Violets, Albertini’s Gem Bar, Kellogg Plastics, The Fox and The Hare Mountain Wear, Idaho Haven, Kellogg Ace Hardware, and Mo’s Froyo & Joe. Each participating business is featured on a small card that has a special discount for customers.

These cards can be picked up at the Chamber office, or any of the participating businesses.

“Supporting local and small businesses is crucial for communities like ours,” Thomas said. “We have so many different and diverse businesses here, there’s something for everyone.”
