Freshman quarterback Cooper Miller ran for three touchdowns in the first half for Wallace, which led 62-36 at halftime.

ST. REGIS –– No stats of information was available for this game.

KELLOGG VOLLEYBALL

- 8/28

Kellogg d. Orofino

OROFINO –– The Lady ‘Cats opened their season with a big CIL win on the road, knocking off the Maniacs (23-25, 33-31, 25-20, & 27-25).

This matchup was one that coach Steph Batchelder was unsure of coming into the season, largely due to Orofino’s experience against a relatively new Wildcat team. However, her team answered the bell with a total team effort.

“The girls played hard and with a lot of tenacity,” Batchelder said. “Orofino was scrappy and got a lot of balls up, but we never gave up, never looked defeated, and had each other’s backs.”

The stats for Kellogg demonstrated just how balanced the match was, with Ella Yrjana and Aleah Philp each finishing with three aces, Dani Henrikson with 17 kills, Jordyn Stutzke with 22 digs, Ella Yrjana with 22 assists, and Ragen Oertli finishing with four blocks.

- 8/31

The Ririe Bulldog Bash Tournament

RIRIE––Kellogg played 14 sets of volleyball against seven quality opponents, which coach Steph Batchelder hopes will be a good barometer of what her team can do this season.

The unique two-set match format allows teams to see several opponents and styles, but also results in a few ties.

Kellogg d. Aberdeen 2-0

Kellogg tied Soda Springs (1-1)

Ririe d. Kellogg (2-0)

Kellogg d. West Jefferson (2-0)

Kellogg d. Oakley (2-0)

Kellogg tied Challis (1-1)

Kellogg d. Declo (2-0)

Winning 10 out of 14 sets on the road is no easy task and Batchelder liked what she saw from her team during the tournament.

Junior Dani Henrikson is emerging as the Wildcats’ go-to player early in the season, finishing the tournament with 34 kills and three blocks.

“Dani killed it this weekend,” Batchelder said. “She played all the way around and was passing like a champ.”

The fast-paced style of the tournament matched the chaotic nature of postseason and state tournament matches and Batchelder came away from the tournament very happy with where her team is early.

The only blemish was the loss to Ririe.

“The girls did so well,” she said. “We lost to Ririe and I don’t think we should’ve, but they are talented, and it was a competitive match.”

Paige Yrjana finished the tournament with 14 aces, Ella Yrjana with 45 assists, Jordyn Stutzke with 41 digs, and Aubree Groth had three blocks.

WALLACE VOLLEYBALL

- 8/26

WALLACE –– The Lady Miners opened their season with a tough, five-set loss to conference foe Genesis Prep at Kirby Krulitz Court (25-15, 25-19, 24-26, 14-25, & 15-11).

Wallace rallied from a quick two-set deficit and looked to have momentum headed into the abbreviated fifth set, but the Jaguars responded.

“Genesis Prep looked to be in mid-season form, with impressive serve receive and defense,” Wallace coach Katie Bauer said.

Sisters Bethany and Kylee Phillips led the way for Wallace with Bethany finishing with 12 kills, while Kylee had 11 kills and 26 digs.

Aubrey Birdsell finished with 31 assists and seven aces.

Even in the loss, Bauer saw a lot of things she liked from her team and is looking forward to the rematch with the Jaguars on September 24.

“I was impressed with our ability to come back and build momentum in the third and fourth set,” Bauer said. “It's going to be a fun series with Genesis Prep this year.”

MULLAN VOLLEYBALL

- 8/29

Kootenai d. Mullan

MULLAN — Kootenai notched a breakthrough victory Thursday.

The Warriors beat Mullan 25-12, 25-21, 25-13 in North Star League play, for their first victory since the 2019 season, and first league win since 2018.

Kootenai had lost 67 straight matches since beating the Kellogg junior varsity in the Warriors’ season opener in 2019.

Kootenai’s last league win came over Mullan in 2018.

“I’m extremely proud of my team,” second-year Kootenai coach Elexus Moore-Rich said. “They pushed themselves tonight; all their hard work has paid off.”
