SCFD2 gets new wheels

KELLOGG –– There’s nothing like that new car smell, or in this case, that new firetruck smell.  

On Thursday, Shoshone County Fire District #2 received its brand new Rosenbauer Maverick Fire Engine, effectively filling the district’s fleet of fire response vehicles.  

SCFD1 Chief Scott Dietrich was excited for the new vehicle, largely because the new vehicle is designed for more rural areas as opposed to the traditional style firetruck.  

“It’s not a cab-over style, instead it’s more of semitruck style,” Dietrich said. “They’re just better off road than the others are. This is good because we respond to a lot of rural calls, so these are really good for what we need.”  

This is the second Maverick that has been purchased by the district in recent years, but the addition of the new one allows them to have one in each of the district’s two fire stations. 

The truck cost the district approximately $450,000, which according to Dietrich was a competitive price for when they made the purchase.  

A full mechanical failure of the district former vehicles effectively forced the district’s hand, but Dietrich knew right away that he wanted to replace that vehicle with one just like the one that had been purchased previously.  

The district will also be moving on from one of their older engines to make room for the new Maverick.  

“It’s a little worn out, but it’s still in service,” Dietrich said. “We’ll probably sell it, basically give it away to a smaller fire department that needs an additional vehicle.”  

Shoshone County Fire District #2, which has stations in Kellogg and Pinehurst, is expecting to receive a new ambulance next month they had previously ordered, which will complete their fleet of emergency response vehicles.
