The Silver Valley took a hit last year when former Shoshone County Sheriff Mike Gunderson passed away following a battle with cancer, but in the wake of their grief, his family has created something to ensure that his legacy lives on.

“The Mike Gunderson Memorial Fund (MGMF) was established to honor the enduring legacy of Mike Gunderson, a dedicated public servant whose life was marked by unwavering commitment to community safety and service,” Rylie Gunderson said.

Rylie is one of Sheriff Gunderson’s daughters and Director of Communications for the MGMF, and while she misses her dad every day, she’s proud of the work her family is doing to honor him.

The MGMF is designed to aid aspiring officers and continue education for men and women in law enforcement in hopes of building future leaders in public safety.

“Through these initiatives, the fund’s aim is to foster safer communities, uphold the values of service and integrity, and inspire others to dedicate their lives to helping others, just as my dad did,” Rylie said. “His commitment to building stronger communities and ensuring a safe environment for everyone left a profound impact on those around him. After he passed, our family knew we had to find a way to honor his vision and keep his spirit of service alive. We created this fund as a lasting tribute to him, honoring his memory while empowering others to serve and make a difference, just as he did.”

As part of their fundraising efforts, a special dinner and auction will be held later this month at the Wallace Elks.

“This event is a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together, celebrate my dad’s legacy, and raise funds for scholarships,” Rylie said. “We are still accepting donations for auction items and contributions to the event. Any support is greatly appreciated and helps make a meaningful impact on the success of the fundraiser. It’s going to be a special night.”

When Sheriff Gunderson passed away in February of last year, he left behind a family, a career, and a community that loved him – It’s only fitting that part of his legacy would entail a memorial fund started by his family, that benefits the careers of people in the field he loved so much, all for the betterment of the community.

“Mike Gunderson lived a life dedicated to public service and helping those around him," Shoshone County Prosecuting Attorney Benjamin Allen said of Gunderson previously.

“We hope to inspire future leaders who will uphold the values of integrity, compassion, and dedication that my dad exemplified,” Rylie said. “Ultimately, our goal is to keep Mike’s legacy alive by ensuring his memory leaves a lasting, positive impact on the public safety sector and the communities it serves.”
