Illness prompts school closure

SILVERTON – Widespread illness at Silver Hills Elementary School in Osburn has prompted school administrators to close the school on February 12-13.

According to a release from Wallace School District Superintendent Todd Howard, because the school has seen significant student and staff illnesses, the decision was made to close the facility for the rest of the week.

The school will also be closed on February 14 for a planned professional development day for the staff and again on Monday in observance of Presidents’ Day.

Howard said the district will have its custodial staff come into the building on Wednesday and Thursday and deep clean the facility.

“We understand that these closures may be an inconvenience, and we sincerely appreciate your understanding and support,” Howard said in the release.

This is the second time Silver Hills has been closed suddenly this year. Last month, the school experienced a small outbreak of bed bugs and closed the school to allow pest control to come into the building.

School will resume on Tuesday, February 18.
