Construction underway for new campground
SMELTERVILLE — The Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation (IDPR) in conjunction with Idaho Department of Environmental Quality, is proud to announce the construction of a 26-site tent-only campground along one of America’s most scenic pathways: the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes.
The new tent-only campground is strategically located along the trail to enhance overnight access and promote sustainable recreation. It is tailored for “bikepackers,” touring cyclists, and adventurers who may also choose to fly into the nearby airport, or other travelers seeking this quiet overnight camping option.
“This project is a great example of how we’re creating more opportunities for Idahoans and visitors to connect with our state parks through unique camping experiences and ensuring these experiences are here for future generations,” said Susan Buxton, Director of the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation.
The new campground features peaceful sites offering an authentic, back-to-nature overnight experience, cyclist-centered amenities including secure bike parking, shower house, potable water, E-bike charging, and hammock posts. It is also near three communities that offer supplies, exploration, and dining.
Stretching 73 miles across the Idaho panhandle from Mullan to Plummer, the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes was named one of the nation’s top 25 trails by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. The trail is renowned for its breathtaking beauty, accessibility, and diverse recreational use—from cyclists and walkers to Nordic skiers and wildlife enthusiasts.
The Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes, developed through a landmark partnership with the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, Union Pacific Railroad, the State of Idaho, and the U.S. Government, continues to stand as a model of collaborative recreation planning.
