KELLOGG BOYS BASKETBALL

Kellogg 53 St. Maries 43
ST. MARIES — Junior Draeden Taylor scored 16 points, and Kellogg hit 7 of 7 3-pointers in the first half and went on to defeat the No. 2 seed St. Maries Lumberjacks 53-43 on Monday night.
“They were clean looks,” Kellogg coach Mike Martin said. “We’re better shooters when we move the ball from side to side, and move the ball inside to out with clean catches. Confidence is a funny thing; you see the ball go through the hoop a couple of times, and it gets contagious.”
“Credit to Mike; his kids executed their game plan and played a great first half,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “We forced 24 turnovers, and I think at one point we had three steals in a row, and each time we turned it right back over to them.”
Radley McDonald added 13 points, Brodie Robinson 10 for Kellogg, which led by as much as 17 points in the first half. Taylor scored eight points in the first quarter, including two 3-pointers. Robinson and Evan Vindasius also hit two 3s each in the first half, McDonald one.
“I just didn't think we got our hands up,” Chase said. “We were in the right spots, we just weren’t getting a hand up from the 3-point line.”
Junior JJ Yearout scored a game-high 24 points for St. Maries, which had won the last 10 district titles. Isaiah Gustaffe had seven points, five rebounds, and five steals. Yearout also had five steals.

Kellogg 48 Orofino 55
KELLOGG — The fourth-seeded Orofino Maniacs, winners of a play-in game against Grangeville last week, advanced to the state 3A tournament with a win over the third-seeded Kellogg Wildcats in the District 1-2 championship game on Wednesday at Andrews Gymnasium.
“Orofino sat back in a zone, and to their credit, they did it well,” Kellogg coach Mike Martin said. “They trapped certain guys, and we didn’t work for good enough shots tonight and settled for playing catch. We weren’t aggressive enough against their zone early, and that set the tone for the night. Hats off to them.”
Sophomore Ty Cheney scored 14 points and Radley McDonald 13 points for Kellogg and were a combined 12 of 15 shooting.
“They were super-efficient,” Martin said. “Those two did a good job of keeping us around and gave us a chance to get back into it.”
Sophomore Blake Barlow scored 17 points for Orofino.
“Barlow shot it well, and they did a good job of executing their stuff,” Martin said. “We prepped to take them out of their stuff,f and they were patient with the ball and did a good job of finding the guys they needed to find.”

Junior Isaiah Gustaffe had 17 points for St. Maries, which jumped out to a 16-4 lead after one quarter as Kellogg missed its first 11 shots. Junior JJ Yearout had 15 points, five rebounds and five assists. Both scored three points in the fourth-quarter run.
Barta and Yearout each hit three 3-pointers for the Lumberjacks, who finished 8 for 16 from deep. Gustaffe hit two 3s.
Junior Draeden Taylor scored 19 points for Kellogg (12-11), which won at St. Maries on Monday, then lost at home to fourth seed Orofino on Wednesday in the district title game.
“We knew coming into this game it was going to be tough,” Kellogg coach Mike Martin said. “Coming off the district championship loss, it was going to come down to whatever team had more juice. And St. Maries just made more shots than we did tonight. We battled to get back into it in the third quarter, but just couldn’t get a stop in the fourth.”
Landon Riberich had 10 rebounds and three blocked shots for St. Maries, and Hayden Defoort had five boards for the Lumberjacks.
“They got punched in the mouth by Kellogg on Monday, and they definitely had a chip on their shoulder the rest of the week, to play as hard as they could,” Chase said.
