Body of missing man found after ATV accident

WALLACE – A multi-day search involving several local law enforcement agencies ended tragically after search and rescue located the body of Clifton Shove.

Shove, 67, was found near Moon Pass late Sunday evening. According to reports from the SCSO, Shove had last been seen on Saturday, around 6 p.m.

According to SCSO Captain Seth Green, the investigation was very clear, showing Shove lost control of his ATV going up a sharp embankment, causing the ATV to flip backwards and land on Shove.

"It was very apparent that this was a single vehicle accident and the weight of the ATV, combined with the force taken from the ATV landing on him, caused Clifton to succumb to his injuries," Green said. "This trail off Moon Pass is not a beginner's trail and is very hazardous."

The SCSO would remind people recreating in the region to always be prepared when they head out. This includes letting people know where you plan to be, when you plan to return, and a fairly detailed list of the gear and supplies you are taking, and wearing the proper safety gear for the activity you are doing.

The weather may be warmer, but the nights are still dropping to winter temperatures. People going into the woods should bring a map, GPS, food, water, shelter, a fire source, and wear sturdy, layered clothing.

"Clifton is well known in the community, an active participant in the Elks club organization, and a posse member at the sheriff's office for many years," Green said. "Clifton had a heart of service and continued to give all he had with no expectation of reward or compensation. Clifton was a military veteran and was a prime example of character that we all should aspire to hold. He will be missed."
