KELLOGG — A rumored threat prompted an investigation last week at Kellogg High School.

The ordeal began early Friday morning, when a rumor began circulating throughout the school surrounding the possibility of violence at KHS.

This resulted in many students reaching out to their parents or guardians to either have them grant permission to sign themselves out of school — or to come and pick them up from school.

“The rumor ran rampant through the student body and a large portion of students, with their parents permission, left school before the end of the day,” said KSD Superintendent Lance Pearson.

As the school and district’s administration scrambled to investigate and respond to the threat’s credibility, they also released the following statement on their social media page.

“I want to address an unsubstantiated rumor regarding a possible threat to Kellogg High School, today May 20, 2022. In partnership with the Shoshone County Sheriff's Office, we have investigated and found no evidence for concern. KSD, KHS, and SCSO ensure the safety of students and staff as an utmost priority and take all reports of this nature seriously. We appreciate the community's help in maintaining a safe school environment. We encourage everyone to say something if they see something. Parents, students, and interested parties are encouraged to always obtain their information directly from factual sources, specifically KHS or KSD. KHS and KSD will always notify students, staff, and parents if there are legitimate threats. Please refer to and rely upon the KHS and KSD Facebook pages, the KSD website, and local media for future information. This message will also be emailed to all KHS families via SchoolMessenger.”

The school spent much of the weekend investigating and despite their best efforts, they found no evidence to the threat’s validity.

“The rumor remains unsubstantiated,” Pearson told the News-Press in an email. “There was no discernible threat to Kellogg High School. “We encourage everyone to say something if they see something. As of this writing, nothing has been reported.”

The Kellogg School District would like to reiterate its commitment to transparency in this regard.

“We will always notify students, staff and parents if there are legitimate, credible threats,” Pearson said. “We will continue to be vigilant and do everything we can to keep all of the students of the Kellogg School District safe. We would also like to thank the Shoshone County Sheriff's Department for their prompt response, support and assistance in this matter.”

The Shoshone News-Press will continue to follow this story for any potential updates.
