From the Picket Line
It’s sad to look across a vacant parking lot that not long ago had the cars of 240+ employees in it. Hecla’s “Power Grab” has forced the employees to choose to strike rather than ratifying a contract that’s made up of mostly concessions that address control, not so much economics. This strike had to be expected by Hecla (HL), for if they truly believed it would be welcomed with open arms, I’m afraid their arrogance and egos have swelled their heads to the point of them not seeing what was obviously apparent. Let’s think about what has occurred: The mining crews break a 16 year record for silver production in 2016, and they are rewarded with a concessionary contract offer, which leads them to vote to strike and then HL says they are disappointed? Really? I don’t believe for a second that management was surprised, and neither should the shareholders. The saddest thing is that HL says they are prepared to wait out the union. Let’s put that into perspective: HL is prepared to starve out the employees who contribute to the company’s success performing one of the most dangerous jobs in the country. On the heels of HL reporting a $69 million dollar profit for 2016, they are forcing through implementation, cuts for the hourly employees at the Lucky Friday. What a wonderful way to acknowledge your employee’s hard work!

Sprucin Up Pinehurst
This is our fourth year of making Pinehurst more beautiful, people and eye friendly. The Pinehurst/Kingston Lions Club have volunteered to do a benefit breakfast on Saturday, April 22, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. to help us raise revenue for this project. Come out and have a hearty breakfast and support our efforts. We started out with hanging baskets on Division Street and large pots at Heritage Park, Hunter Memorial Park and shrubs and pots at the Marek Basketball Court. Last year we did landscaping at City Hall with New shrubbery, pots landscaping rocks, beds and a bench; thanks to Art & Sherry Krulitz, Dave Olson, Carla Ross, Nancie Burkhart and donors we accomplished this. We appreciate all the “Kudos” and “Thumbs Up” we’ve received. We now do 21 hanging baskets, 11 large flower pots, shrubs and plants througout the town. We are so thankful to the Lions Club for Helping us in our goal. If Anyone would like to help in any way contact Nancie Burkhart at 682-4027, Debbie Marek at 682-2385 or City Hall at 682-3721. Come out Saturday for a great breakfast to start your day and support our efforts. Thank you in advance.

CANCER, MY SPIRITUAL JOURNEY Pt. 2
WHAT KIND OF FRESH HELL IS THIS?—MY TREATMENTS
We must stand together
To my hard rock brothers and sisters, There is nothing I can say that hasn’t already been said, but I’d like to share my opinion on it all. This is no simple task, to stand against tyrannical behavior like what we have been witnessing since this all began. There are moments where the conversation and boyish banter ends, and there is a tense quite around the burn barrels. A moment where the poker faces end, and the true emotion shimmers across the faces of these harden miners. The vulnerability of doubt, stress, and frustration of the events that have led us to this point. I know because I have felt it myself. But then there is another emotion I see as well: unwavering resolution. Resolution in knowing that what we as a unit have stood against the very things that many around the country are standing against: Greed, silence, fear, and injustice. These “people” we fight against are not people, for their actions are that more of a cell gone cancerous or a parasite growing in its host. They are the very infection that seeks to cripple the American middle class, and by extent the civil rights we have, around this nation today. The body of the middle class is sick, and we must be the cure. This is war time, brothers and sisters. Any poetic notions any have about this must be expelled from your minds now. This will be ugly, this will be stressful, this will be a hard ride, but we must endure. Do not allow any voices of disagreement or division cause our lines to fall. We must not only watch our front, but are rear and flanks as well. This is only the beginning of what could be a very long war. We all must do what we need to survive. Find other employment, move from the area, cut back on things, etc. It maybe difficult, it maybe something we don’t want to do, but war causalities are inevitable and unavoidable. We cannot give into this sickness. To give up and form of the fight means that the body will die. However I see only two options for the ugly “Mother Hecla” to do: either come off their self righteous ivory towers and talk to us like human beings, or close the mine indefinitely. We all would like to see the former happen, but if that latter does occur we must be ready for that. But do not lose hope, brothers and sisters. Because we are a rare breed. We are forged in the deep fires of stone and steel. We work in the darkness to better our lives in the light. We bend rock to our will. WE ARE MINERS, WE ARE THE 5114, and we are the STRONG. Cameron “Brown Bear” Erickson
Solidarity
OK brothers and sisters, we are in this now. We are all to the end of the line as far as paychecks go and already we can feel the stress on how to make ends meat. They have us right where they want us. “Starve em out!” “That’ll teach em for walking out.” “They’ll cave when they can’t put food on the table.” These greedy corporate (BLANKS) haven’t seen what I’ve seen on the picket line and at our union headquarters. I’ve had the pleasure to meet the women and kids of the men I work with, and their strength and character is unmatched and inspiring to say the least. Strength in family is a powerful thing. Having said that, strength and character doesn’t go far at the grocery store. Please Please Please don’t hesitate or be embarrassed to apply for Strike relief assistance when you have exhausted all other resources available to you. That’s what it’s there for. The hardship committee has the toughest job of all. They are smart, dedicated and committed to helping out. They don’t anticipate any problems but they must make sure the process is fair for everyone. Also please help out on the picket line. It goes a long way with the hardship committee if you have been helping on the line. Hell, it’s a great gig, the food is great (we’re getting better at bbq all the time). Bring the kids for lunch and join in on the bs sessions. There’s a lot to learn about jobs, or just to hear how others are getting by. I received in the mail today propaganda from our “Miner of the Year” award winning mine manager, Clayr Alexander. My first impulse was to respond to each question with what I believe to be the truth, and not the usual company slant to make it sound “good for the glory of all.” But I’ve decided not to validate it in such a manner. I think it’s fair enough to say that we have heard enough from Clayr and his entire negotiating team for the best part of a year. We have read their “last best and final” offer and overwhelmingly rejected it. We rejected it because a blind man can see that it is at the very least a union crippling, if not a complete union breaking offer which puts our jobs at risk and makes Hecla the “puppet master” of all employees and diminishes our voice in almost everything pertaining to what we do. And at the Lucky Friday, this could only become dangerous. Their arrogance makes them think they are the only ones that should be making any kind of decisions at all. This is a mine that is seismically active all the time. This is not an office setting where you are sitting in a cubicle all day. Our voice will be heard! This is a blatant power grab, nothing more or less. If Clayr would like to come back to the table and negotiate with a “give and take” attitude in mind, as opposed to “all take and no give”, then we are opened to a two way negotiation. If there is any questions on anything about the detail on this contract, please call the union hall, get a hold of Phil Epler, or just drop by the picket line and maybe we can help. We are in this together folks, and together we will get through this, but it’s going to be a long tough fight when your fighting against multi millionaires that think every word out of their mouth is golden. But money doesn’t make them right. And I know with all my heart and soul that this is a fight worth fighting for. The Lucky Friday is our mine too. We’ve spilled way too much sweat, blood and tears over the years to be disrespected like this. It WILL run again, with US in it, and it will KICK ASS as it always has.

Book Review: A LAWYER'S JOURNEY by Morris Dees (biography, 2001)
A tame-sounding title of an attention-gripping story. Those of us who lived in northern Idaho in the 1990’s might have called it STIFLING THE SWASTIKA IN AMERICA. We remember Richard Butler and his militant white supremacist Aryan Nation compound in the town of Hayden Lake, just north of Coeur d’Alene. Claiming their First Amendment rights, they would parade down the street behind a Nazi flag. Many people on the sidewalks would turn their backs to them in disapproval.
