I imagine by now you people who live and drive in the Fabulous Silver Valley of North Idaho are tired of playing the same game over and over. The name of the game is called Dodging the Potholes. It doesn’t cost anything to join, but it could be costly. The Dike road in Pinehurst is worse than the horse and buggy days; also, the Upper Pinecreek road has so many potholes that I couldn’t count all of them. Spokane has the same problem, they are using a new mixture and I sure as hell hope that it works.

Wilber D. Groves, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed suddenly on March 10th, 2017. Willie was born to Walter and Laura (Japp) Groves on March 24, 1947 in Omaha, Nebraska. Willie served in the United States Army from 1968 to 1972. He and Linda Mitchell married in August of 1977. Willie started working at the Sunshine Mine that same month, and worked there until the mine closed in 2001. He is survived by wife Linda, son Ken (Denise), grandsons Liam and Zane, brothers Wyatt (Jan) and Lou (JoAnne), and sisters Lucille, Laureen (Verbil), as well as several nieces and nephews. Willie was preceded in death by his mother Laura, father Walter, and sister Jeannie. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Diabetes Association.

Arlene Claire Sorenson, 82
Arlene Claire Sorenson passed away on February 20, 2017. Arlene was born to Eldon (Shorty) and Goldie Jaeger on April 1, 1934 in Kellogg, ID, one of five children. She grew up and attended schools in Kellogg, graduating from Kellogg High School in 1952. In 1954, she married the love of her life, William (Bill) Sorenson and together they raised three children: Marc, Bonnie and Steve. Arlene’s family was the center of her life. Their goal was to rear their children to become compassionate, educated and contributing citizens. Arlene lived her first fifty years in Kellogg where she developed a love for golf. Always competitive, she honed her golf skills winning numerous tournaments and several club championships over the years. She also loved playing cards with friends and sharing a laugh with friends and family. She and Bill moved to Hermiston, OR in 1983 and spent the next 15 years working side by side at their namesake store, Arlene’s Hallmark, before retiring in 1998. She and Bill greatly enjoyed their retirement years together, which included many memorable trips with family and friends. Arlene is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, Bill; son Marc (Becky), daughter Bonnie Gracia (Dave) and son Steve (Maureen); sisters Jean Bellamy, Carol Poulson and Winnie DeJanevich; brother Jim Jaeger; seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Arlene was a beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Arlene’s family wishes to extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Jones, nurses, volunteers and the entire staff of the Chaplaincy Hospice House in Kennewick, WA, to the Brookdale Torbet memory care facility in Richland, WA and to Dr. Joseph Gifford of Hermiston, Oregon for their exceptionally kind treatment and professionalism.

I have to admit that I have come to enjoy the reaction we get from fellow hikers we meet while out on the trail. It seems that Tank and Kiff bring a smile to everyones faces and are perfect ice breakers for even the most solitary of hikers. In fact, we manage to strike up a conversation with almost everyone we meet.
