James H. Peterson was unexpectedly taken from his family and loved ones on July 4, 2020. James was born September 27, 1978 in Kellogg, Idaho. He loved the Silver Valley and all of the outdoor activities it offered. In the summer, he could be found in the mountains on a dirt bike, and in the winter, on a snowboard at one of the ski resorts. He had no fear in either activity, pushing the boundaries as much as humanly possible. He loved a challenge, and nothing scared him.

William A. Scott, 81, of Harrison, Idaho passed away on March 29, 2020. Born in Plains, Montana on May 18, 1938 to Elmer and Welma (Cummings) Scott, he was raised by his grandmother, Lola Dell Cummings. He lived in Plains through the first grade and then moved to Polaris, Idaho and attended school in Osburn and Kellogg. He was a member of the 1954-1955 and 1955-1956 State Championship basketball teams. In 1958 he married Sandra L. Chaffee and was blessed with two children, Bruce William and Stacey JoyAnn. He graduated from Eastern Washington State College with a degree in Personnel Management and received a direct commission through the ROTC program as a Second Lieutenant in the Army. He did tours in Ft. Knox, KY; Germany; Ft. Lee, VA; Vietnam; Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD; Stockton, CA; Jakarta, Indonesia; Ft. Riley, KS; Hawaii; and Ft. Lewis, WA. He retired after 23 years of service as a Lieutenant Colonel and received numerous awards, including the Bronze Star in Vietnam and the Meritorious Service Medal upon retirement. After retiring, he spent eight years in Saudi Arabia training their National Guard and later served Shoshone County, Idaho for eight years as the Disaster Services Coordinator.

Our beloved mother Lila Rose Crawford passed away peacefully into her Father’s house on July 9, 2020 with her family by her side. Lila was born on February 13, 1927 at her family’s farm in Buhl, Idaho. She weighed 1½ lbs at birth and survived to everyone’s surprise! She was a survivor through the course of her life and inspired not only her family but those who knew and loved her. Lila went to cosmetology school in Missoula, MT where she later met & married Robert Stroud. They owned and operated several restaurants throughout Montana and eventually settled their family in Smelterville and operated the B & L Cafe along with their five children. Upon Bob’s death, she later met and married Lawrence Crawford who introduced her to the joys of hunting & fishing. They had many great adventures throughout the Northwest. Her greatest passion was oil painting and she was a very accomplished artist. She owned an art studio in Silverton where she taught classes, and later offered classes out of her home in Cataldo.

COEUR d’ALENE – Beginning Tuesday, July 14, 2020, Panhandle Health District (PHD) will only be writing orders for COVID-19 testing for individuals who are uninsured and do not have a primary care provider. PHD is asking individuals to use their primary care provider for their COVID-19 test ordering needs. Due to the increased number of COVID-19 positive cases in our community, PHD will be focusing our resources on the public health function of contact tracing in order to slow the spread of the virus.

Mary Louise Howell Damiano, 87, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, died on July 7, 2020. Mary was born on December 27, 1932 in Yakima, Washington to Thomas W. and Margaret Koempel Howell. Mary graduated from Davis High School in 1951 and attended Washington State College where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. Mary met her husband, Gary Damiano, at WSC and they were married on February 12, 1955 in Yakima. They settled in Kellogg, Idaho and were blessed with three daughters, Debbie, Susan and Michele.

ST. MARIES – The St. Joe Ranger District of the Idaho Panhandle National Forests has opened National Forest System (NFS) Roads 1950, 1955, 3478, and 1487 for public, personal use firewood gathering this summer. Forest Service Roads 1950, 1955, and 3748 are located approximately four miles southeast of Emida, Idaho. Forest Service Road 1487 is located approximately six miles west of Clarkia, Idaho. The roads will remain open until August 31, 2020, when they close prior to the beginning of elk archery season.

COEUR d’ALENE – The USDA Forest Service will temporarily open two additional fuelwood cutting areas on the Coeur d’ Alene River Ranger District, allowing for public personal firewood gathering in order to reduce fuel loads in areas that otherwise may be gated.

Ralph Gordon Nyhus passed away April 11, 2020 with his son, David, beside him in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Ralph was born March 11, 1937 to Harry and Eveleth (Winger) Nyhus in Bagley, MN. He was raised and went to grade school in Debs, MN. He went to high school in Bemidji, MN. He left home at an early age, chasing his dreams. He served honorably in the US Navy and served during the Cuban missile crisis in 1962. After he was honorably discharged, Ralph went to work in California, Montana, and Alaska. He worked on the Alaska Pipeline during the oil boom years on the North Slope . He worked as a diesel mechanic and a crane operator. He married Norma Morris in 1969 and they divorced in 1992. They had 2 children, David and Stacey. Ralph loved his children very much. Ralph retired in Idaho. Ralph had a passion for restoring old cars and had too many to count over the years. He also had a passion for telling stories about all the places he had been and all the people he met over the years. Unfortunately, his health began to decline in 2016. He is survived by his children, David Nyhus of Great Falls, MT and Stacey Nyhus of Great Falls, MT, sister, Ardell Lewis(Jim) of Bemidji, 4 granddaughters, 1 grandson, 3 great grandchildren, and companion of 23 years, Martha Lynn. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister, Adeline, and sister Marilyn Lenes. A private memorial service is planned at a later date at Pony Lake Trinity Church, Bemidji.

First case of COVID-19 in Shoshone County has been confirmed
The Panhandle Health District (PHD) has confirmed the first case of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in a male in his 30s in Shoshone County.

On Saturday, June 20, 2020, at 2:30 pm, Richard Chaffee, age 76, was graduated to his heavenly home, carried by his guardian angels to the very presence of God and his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Shirley [Spouse] and Rebecca [Daughter] were there by his side, and Aaron [Son] via FaceTime to say their “goodbyes.” He had several physical complications, but in the end, it was COVID-19 that took his life.
Panhandle COVID-19 cases jump to 385
COEUR d’ALENE — The Panhandle Health District reports that 44 new cases of COVID-19 were discovered Thursday, which brings the total number to 385 in the five norther counties. Since 128 of those cases are no longer being monitored, that means that 257 are active.

Joe Harvey passed peacefully from this life on May 8, 2020 at his home in Coeur d’Alene, ID. We are thankful he lived a fulfilling life for 80 years and passed peacefully. He was born October 21, 1939 in Spokane, WA to Pat and Ella Harvey and grew up in Kellogg. He spent many hours at the local YMCA where he won trophies for boxing, swimming and made the Junior Olympics team for diving.
