BOISE – Idaho workers laid off due to the coronavirus filed 32,941 initial claims for unemployment insurance between March 22 -28, 2020, an increase of 143 percent over the previous week.
Panhandle COVID-19 case count sits at 37
The Panhandle Health District (PHD) announces the total number of cases of COVID-19 is 37 in the Panhandle area. Thirty-six of the cases are in Kootenai County and one in Bonner County.
Sheriff opposes stay-at-home order
SANDPOINT — Bonner County Sheriff Daryl Wheeler has penned an open letter calling on Gov. Brad Little to lift Idaho’s stay-at-home order because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Jesse Stephen Rose, 46
Jesse Stephen Rose was born May 5, 1973, in Silverton, Idaho. He was the fourth son of Ronald Richard Rose and Wilma Louise (Kent) Rose. He went to heaven March 26, 2020, to spend eternity with his Savior Jesus Christ. Jesse grew up in Wallace, ID, where he graduated from Wallace High School in 1993. He attended the Wallace Assembly of God. He delivered papers with his siblings for the Kellogg Evening News until graduation. Jesse then enlisted in the United States Army where he served his beloved country for five years. He was stationed in Panama during the Gulf War. Jesse was very patriotic, and he was rarely ever seen without wearing an Army hat.
Gladys Mary Visnes
Gladys Mary Visnes died March 23, 2020 in Coeur d’Alene with loved ones by her side. She was 98 years old, almost 99. Each year the day after her birthday, May 29, she would round her age to the next year as she was proud to lead a long, full life.
William Bill A. Scott, 81
William A. Scott, 81, of Harrison, Idaho passed away on March 29, 2020. Born in Plains, Montana on May 18, 1938 to Elmer and Welma (Cummings) Scott, he was raised by his grandmother, Lola Dell Cummings. He lived in Plains through the first grade and then moved to Polaris, Idaho and attended school in Osburn and Kellogg. He was a member of the 1954-1955 and 1955-1956 State Championship basketball teams. In 1958 he married Sandra L. Chaffee and was blessed with two children, Bruce William and Stacey JoyAnn. He graduated from Eastern Washington State College with a degree in Personnel Management and received a direct commission through the ROTC program as a Second Lieutenant in the Army. He did tours in Ft. Knox, KY; Germany; Ft. Lee, VA; Vietnam; Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD; Stockton, CA; Jakarta, Indonesia; Ft. Riley, KS; Hawaii; and Ft. Lewis, WA. He retired after 23 years of service as a Lieutenant Colonel and received numerous awards, including the Bronze Star in Vietnam and the Meritorious Service Medal upon retirement. After retiring, he spent eight years in Saudi Arabia training their National Guard and later served Shoshone County, Idaho for eight years as the Disaster Services Coordinator.
