LETTER: Finish Teeters Field!
While I would argue that Teeters Field is possibly the best venue in all of high school sports, it does need some TLC. A few years ago, the city and the school district were notified by the IHSAA (Idaho High School Activities Association – the governing body over high school athletics), that Teeters was unfit to host games due to safety concerns over the proximity of the existing concession stand to the back of the endzone.

Paving at boat launch to begin next week
Next week, crews from the Coeur d’Alene Work Trust will begin the second phase of a clean up project near the Cataldo Boat Launch. Blood supply plummets
With the local blood supply depleted by almost half since the start of summer, and only a day’s worth of O-positive blood available, donations are more important than ever. “We’re in an emergency shortage,” said Jennifer Hawkins, regional director of Vitalant Northwest. “We’re seeing numbers we’ve never seen before.” Vitalant is a nonprofit organization that provides donated blood to more than 40 hospitals throughout the Inland Northwest, including Kootenai Health. The number of regular donors has plummeted in the last decade, from about 100,000 to around 23,000. More than 200 donors a day are needed to maintain a five-day blood supply in the region.

Silverton family loses home in Sunday morning fire
Just before 10 a.m. on Sunday emergency crews were dispatched to a structure fire in the village of Silverton. Upon arrival, the upper floors of the single family home were engulfed in flames so the responding firefighters used a transitional attack on the structure to get the fire reduced on the outside before they attempted to attack the blaze on the inside.

Diamond Watch Fire exceeds initial attack
Since it was started by lightning in mid-July, the Diamond Watch Fire has exceeded the initial attack, U.S. Forest Service officials said in a press release Friday. The fire, now estimated at 120 acres, is being fought by 24 personnel. Located 5.5 miles due west of Nordman, the fire was reported July 14 and is listed at 0% containment. Burning on a ridge to the east of Diamond Peak in Pend Oreille County, smoke from the fire can be seen from the Priest Lake area. The fire is burning in "timber litter" with jackpots of heavier fuels in a dense forest canopy.

The annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament has consistently been among the more popular for streetball enthusiasts, but this year broke the mold. In what could very well go down as the hottest event ever, 164 teams made their way to Kellogg for the weekend – beating the previous high mark by nearly 20 teams and a 53% increase from last year’s event. That’s quite a few people when you factor in that each player is bringing along a few friends and family to cheer them on during the entire spectacle.

Formally recognized as Proposition 1 (Prop 1), the Quality Education Act is the creation of Idaho grassroots organization Reclaim Idaho. The initiative, which was officially confirmed for the Nov. 8 ballot last week, calls for more than $300 million in K-12 funding.
